A new facade for a school building in Istanbul, built on a controlled irregularity of vertical and horizontal elements. An economical design in white, brown and timber that stands out from a distance.

Rear facade: the stair tower.
Campus side: the facade along a footpath lined with newly planted trees; black and white.
The campus side.

We set out to give the building a distinct identity among the other schools in the area. Shifting vertical and horizontal elements create a controlled irregularity. The lines are drawn from the existing structure: the columns set out the principal lines of the facade.

One floor is brown, the next white. The white facade steps outwards to make the change of level visible, reading as a white layer wrapped around the building. On the rear facade, large windows bring daylight into the stair, where white, brown and anthracite are used together.

At the school's request, the approach was kept economical. The result preserves the school's serious, respected image, while its colours and materials relate it to the other buildings on the campus.
